image I have wide experience with the 11+, with many past papers and other resources to help your child through the exam preparation process. One to one tuition is the best way to proceed as I can assess the child’s needs and cater to them individually. An hour a week is the minimum amount of tutored time (from year 4) alongside regular homework set weekly. Groups are possible too, but there will not be the possibility of tailoring the work in quite the same way.

For mathematics, students should know their times tables facts extremely well before embarking upon 11+ preparations. The exam will test the entire KS2 curriculum, despite being taken at the start of year 6. It is important that your child is able to cope with the extra work load and confident in their ability in Maths. The English exam paper uses difficult texts from authors such as Dickens, Hardy, Greene and Munro etc. It is imperative that your child has an excellent command of vocabulary. This is enhanced by reading widely, especially the classics. You can find a recommended reading list here. Part of the English exam now involves a creative/descriptive and instructional writing section. This requires perfection in punctuation, as well as the use of good vocabulary and writing techniques.

image The Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE) has now changed the exam and there is no longer a separate VR paper. Verbal reasoning is now covered in the English paper and non-verbal reasoning within the Maths paper. Please read the guidance offered here. image
